Come learn about The Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer Program and sign up for the 2026 Training Class. The next class will not be offered until 2028.
Led by Agriculture-Horticulture Extension Agent Melinda Roberts, the Iredell County Extension Master Gardener℠ (EMG) program is a volunteer-driven initiative that provides research-based horticultural education to the local community.
The program operates under the N.C. Cooperative Extension and is part of a larger network that empowers residents to cultivate healthy, sustainable landscapes.
Program Overview

Mission: To connect the people of Iredell County to horticulture through science-based education and community outreach.

Core Activities: Volunteers assist with demonstration gardens, youth programs (like Junior Master Gardeners), community events, and a dedicated Plant Clinic where residents can get answers to gardening and pest problems.

Training: The program typically offers a comprehensive training course every two years. The 2026 Training Class runs from February through May, covering topics like botany, soil health, entomology, and pesticide safety.
Certification Requirements
To become a certified Master Gardener volunteer, participants must:

Complete 40 hours of initial classroom instruction.

Pass a comprehensive exam.

Complete a 40-hour internship assisting with local Extension projects.

Maintain status annually with 20 hours of service and 10 hours of continuing education.
