Youth & 4-H Through 4-H, more than 187,000 young people in North Carolina learn new skills and serve their communities each year. 4-H offers clubs, special interest programs, summer camps, school enrichment and after-school child care. Guided by North Carolina Cooperative Extension agents and adult and teen volunteers, 4-H'ers gain knowledge, skills and experience that help them become responsible citizens and leaders. What is 4-H? 4-H is not justs cows and cooking anymore! 4-H is many times thought of as a farming type club. Today 4-H has projects that cover a vast variety of topics from computers, drama, crafts, wildlife, ATV safety, health/nutrition. You name it 4-H has it! Just give us a try!!! So check out the 20th century 4-H program today. Iredell County 4-H is a FREE organization for young people who enjoy "learning by doing". Through 4-H programs and clubs, you can gain valuable life skills such as responsibility, leadership, self-esteem, critical thinking, communication skills and good citizenship - and have a good time doing it! We also don't have costly uniforms, or dues. Do you like learning new and exciting things? Do you like planting flowers, riding horses, working with your hands, and making friends? Then 4-H is for you. 4-Hers do all sorts of fun things at meetings. Some clubs have a special interest, like sewing, horses, livestock, scrapbooking, etc.... Others are general interest clubs that offer a wide range of activities. If you join a special interest club, then your activities will center around that. For example, if you join a horse club, you'll learn how to ride and take care of horses. Each club sets its own schedule. Most meet only once a month. And meetings usually last between 1-2 hours. Others are in after-school programs or home schools that may meet more often. 4-H allows kids the flexibility to choose their interests and learn about them (versus having a set curriculum). It also allows kids to become as active as they would like to, with very few actual requirements (other than good behavior that is). In the summer, 4-H'ers may go to 4-H camp and participate in special programs like our summertime fun activities. 4-H's inclusive programs and camps are open to all youth ages 5-19 regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, sex or disabilities. Contact us today to find out about clubs that meet in your area by e-mailing Nelson McCaskill, 4-H agent or calling him at (704) 873-0507.
